There is a growing interest in using drones for different applications aside from entertainment. As the technology advances, the features added to drones are of good use to many applications. Owning a drone can be useful at home not just to take beautiful views and aerial shots but also to help you with simplifying some tasks at home.
More and more inspection companies are using drones these days in fulfilling their jobs as inspectors because drones save them a lot of time and energy in doing their jobs, they also keep them safe, and most importantly, they work efficiently and provide accurate results.
Uses of Drones at Home:
-
Home Inspection
One of the uses of drones is for the home inspection. Aside from roof inspection, a drone can also be used to inspect other parts of the house that cannot easily be seen or checked by the naked eye just like the chimney.
Home inspection companies are now using drones with cameras for the home inspection. They rely on visual images or videos in order to relay the impact of some of the defects of a property. Drones are now being used by individual or company home inspectors because they give a unique aerial perspective and they have the ability to conduct a thorough, quick, safe, and efficient inspection without having to do the traditional way of home and roof inspection. Home inspectors don’t need to risk their lives and be prone to accidents by climbing on ladders and reaching the higher parts of the house and cause damage to parts of the house by stepping on them. They don’t need to climb long ladders, have a problem balancing themselves on the roof, or negotiate tricky angles by using this powerful tool.
A drone never makes contact with the roof or other parts of the house so you don’t need to be worried about damaging parts of your home. It also allows the higher parts of the house to be inspected no matter how high, how steep, and what material it is made of.
The aerial view that a drone provides can also show images of hard to reach areas of homes such as crawl spaces that contain air ducts and water pipes. These crawl areas have a potential for having rodents and termites which can’t be detected easily.
A thermal sensing device that can be attached to a drone can be used to detect possible problems inside of walls, for example, walls that are losing cold from the air-condition or heat from the heater. A radon testing equipment can also alert you of potential health hazards.

Structural Safety Inspections
Aside from inspecting parts of a home, drones can also be used to inspect gas and oil pipelines, power lines, rotor blades, transmission towers, bridges, buildings, and wind turbines which can help utility companies inspect these areas. Drones can easily access these areas and provide real-time and high-quality visual images and videos of these areas which enables the inspector or a team of inspectors to access information from a safe position. Complex infrastructure as the ones mentioned earlier can be monitored regularly using drones. Other additional features of a drone that can help in identifying information and problems regarding these complex infrastructures are thermal readings, three dimensions, and metal strain detection. These features can help improve structural safety inspections of homes.
Small drones are ideal for this type of inspection. They can hover and get close to these infrastructures and provide more detailed images to improve performance in ensuring safety in houses.
Drones that are used for inspecting structures are flown in a predefined pattern that captures images of every inch of the structure. The images can be analyzed by a building inspector, site manager, or an engineer safely in their offices. Using drones instead of doing the traditional method of inspecting structures saves time which can be used in doing a more detailed analysis of the images captured on a computer. The images captured by the drone provide a record of a home or building’s current state at the time of inspection and can be used as a reference for further analysis in the future or for insurance purposes.

Home Security and Surveillance
Home security drones are a hot topic in today’s world because of the advancement of technology in this area. There are now several companies that are launching surveillance drones in the market.
These home security and surveillance drones have sensors to detect physical movement, vibrations on the ground, or any acoustic signal. The mechanism varies for each drone but these are basically the functions of a home security drone. Most of them are still battery operated but some of them are solar-powered. Some drones integrate advanced features such as the ability to chase a suspicious person and thermal sensors to detect possible hazards like fire.
The downside to having a home security drone is that it cannot hover around a property 24/7 because the battery cannot last that long. Some drones are launched either manually or automatically once an abnormality is detected. Although drones can be relied on for home security and surveillance, it’s still best to have CCTVs installed in your homes and just use drones as secondary measures.
If you are to use drones for home security and surveillance, make sure that your drone is equipped with motion sensors to be able to detect movement and send alerts or notifications to smartphones.
Some drones used for surveillance are also equipped with advanced infrared sensors to be able to do surveillance even at night. Some drones also have a night vision feature and would function once given the command.
Drones indeed have a lot of advantages especially with the rapid advancement of technology where new features are added every now and then. Some people may find drones as a product of luxury but for some people, it is a good investment that is worth investing in to help maintain their beloved homes and prevent further damages, accidents, intrusions, and other hazards from happening.
